Rockaway Pizzeria is Finally Opening Today in Regent Square
Plus the Lawrenceville Farmer's Market will host Driftwood Oven and Upslope Pizza.
Hope you all had a great Pittsburgh Marathon Weekend! I completed the half marathon in a time of 1:18:37 placing 57th in the field and 2nd in my age division. Not a bad showing on a humid day!
Thankfully, I drew on the strength and power of all the pizza I consumed leading up to this moment. As I cruised up the Birmingham Bridge, pushing up hill for over a mile straight, I thought back to the slices of Spak that built my hamstrings. The Driftwood Oven squares that infused my calves with the strength to push off the inclined cement. The mobile pizza pop ups that fill my cells with the energy to take on these endurance endeavors. Without pizza I would wilt. With pizza, I was able to finish strong by closing the last mile in 5:24, passing a number of folks beat up by the course.
If you’re an endurance athlete you need to think about making pizza the foundation of your training nutrition.
Rockaway Pizzeria Opens Today No Matter What
After Rockaway Pizzeria was derailed from opening last week due to the extreme power outage that rocked Regent Square and other neighborhoods. After seven months of waiting, what’s one more week?
This topic came up during the half marathon start. I ran into Stephen who I ran with for about half a mile. During that time we chatted about pizza and how thankful he was to have great pizza in the neighborhood. He asked me when it might be open and I said I think it’s gonna be this coming week. Wow, now here we are.
I told Stephen he might want to start camping outside Rockaway Pizzeria now as the lines will be long and ferocious. If you are eager for Rockaway I hope you’re reading this from the comfort of the line that is no doubt forming outside their doors in Regent Square!
Rockaway Pizzeria posted the following on their Instagram:
We open this Friday, May 9th, at 11am. I don’t care what kind of storm comes, I’ll sling this shit by candle light. Regent Square - thank you for 7 months of patience. White Oak - bring your ID, you get 10% off for life. See ya Friday.
I was lucky enough to sample some of the R&D items at Rockaway Pizzeria back in March and was blown away. The proper products, especially the Italian hoagie, look supreme. Excited to pop down to Regent Square.
Lawrenceville Farmer’s Market Highlights Local Pizza Makers
The Lawrenceville Farmer’s Market is a highlight of the week for me. Years ago I used to setup shop there on Saturdays and sell my bagels in Arsenal Park. I sold every bagel I ever made, it was a fun and very intense venture. My bagels days are over, but the Lawrenceville Farmer’s Market does a great job of showcasing local creators.
This year they’ll have a number of food vendors. The two relevant to this newsletter would be Driftwood Oven and Upslope Pizza. Upslope Pizza is a mobile pizza unit that has been on the classic brewery circuit. I’ve had them a few times and am working on a piece about my experience. If you see them definitely check them out.
This year the LFM will take place every Tuesday, from May 20 though November 25, 3-7pm, at Bay 41. Not every food vendor will be at every market, so check the Lawrenceville Farmer’s Market Instagram for the latest.
Wow, short and to the point this week. Hope you’re having a great week and will be dining on some pizza this week! It’s Mother’s Day weekend so maybe take your mom out for a nice ‘77 Club pizza.
Pizza ya later!

Congrats on your race! Thanks for the updates on Rockaway!
Congratulations on your run! Pizza is the foundation of my nutrition. So, I guess that makes me an endurance athlete.
