Hi there! Here I am posting with a pristine slice of Spak Brothers pizza at Two Fray’s, a perfect Penn Ave combo.
Here’s some pizza news!
Ryan Deto, a journalist at the Tribune Review, brought Altoona Hotel Pizza to the masses in the early days of the pandemic. He’s now bringing his wide-range of pizza expertise to the Sewickley Library on April 24 to educate the masses about Ohio Valley pizza.
I reached out to Ryan to get more background on what motivated him to give this pizza seminar. Ryan says:
I love how Pennsylvania pizza is a microcosm of the state, with each region having its own unique pizza style, like how each region has its own distinct culture and traditions. And I hope to share the history of its pie, each of their unique styles, and motivate people to travel the state to try the pizzas for themselves. As background, I have tried all the pizza's I will be presenting on, and just love traveling the state. The main reason I wanted to do the program is that many of the pizza's aren't marketed very much, but I really think they are worth bragging about.
Readers of this newsletter know that we are sitting on a treasure trove of pizza. If we could frack for pizza instead of oil and gas we’d be the richest region in the world.
You can sign up and learn more about the event here.
If you’re interested in my take on Altoona Hotel pizza please revisit this old podcast episode I made with my wife Christa. A friend of ours was traveling through the Altoona area and grabbed us a slice. It did not disappoint. It did not excite either. It kind of warped all senses.
Bitter Ends 4/20 Pizza Focaccia
Bitter Ends is hosting quite the 4/20 spread this weekend. No idea what that day has to do with munchies or pizza, but they’re boasting that the’ll have some Pizza Focaccia. Will it be covered in onions? I don’t know if there are any onions left in the region after their stint of hoagie making a few years back, but we can pray. Something fun to snack on this Saturday.
Record Store Day Pizza Extravaganza at Government Records
Up and coming pizza maker Dan, of Mun’s Pizza and progenitor of Yinzerpolitan pizza, will be at Government Records this record store day (4/20) slinging pizzas.
If I was going to splurge big time at Record Store Day I think I’d go with:
100 Gecs - Snake Eyes. I love 100 Gecs and you will too after hearing Hollywood Baby! I’m just a little Hollywood Baby.
Flying Burrito Brothers - Live in Amsterdam. I bet that rips.
Talking Heads - Live at WCOZ 77. Live Talking Heads? Say no more. I’ve been listening to Stop Making Sense lately, that’s tough to top. Maybe a perfect album. Can’t sleep on The Name of the Band is the Talking Heads which I did find in a used bin at Government Records.
Couple of good pizza updates for ya. Hope you find your way to good pizza this weekend!
